MYST JOINS BOADICEA
TO CELEBRATE HER
200TH BIRTHDAY

The MYST Boadicea Pursuit Race,
a celebration of 200 years of a local
Oyster Smack and recognition of the
role she has had to play in inspiring and
encouraging generations of young sailors, will take place on Saturday 16th August.

The aim of the race is to give chase to the Boadicea as she sails a course around the River Blackwater. Starts will be staggered with the slowest going first and the fastest last with the timing such that everyone should finish together. Boadicea will be the first to start but that’s not to say she might not have to do an extra rounding if she’s not the slowest on handicap on the day.

In celebration of her historic achievement it is hoped working boats, classic yachts, cruisers, racing yachts and day boats will turn out to salute the Boadicea and, in the spirit of her mandate for the future, take as many youngsters as possible afloat. It will be to competitors advantage with favourable times given to those with Under 18s on board, at the helm or making up the entire crew.

The Race will be followed by a prize giving and Boadicea’s official 200th Birthday Party at West Mersea Yacht Club.

Boadicea is a traditional working Oyster Smack and has plied the River Blackwater since 1808 when she was first launched from her builder’s yard in Maldon. She has been part of the Frost family since 1938.

The Mersea Youth Sailing Trust has been formed to give grass roots support to youth sailing, giving children and teenagers the chance to challenge themselves on the water or to take their sailing to a higher level.
